Google Chrome would like to access your contacts

Installing Mountain Lion on my laptop has caused some interesting things to pop up. For instance, did you know that Chrome reads your contacts? I sure didn't. Look at this:

Chrome wants my contacts?

It had been running just fine, but as soon as a text input field opened up on a form while tagging a call, it popped up. As you can see, I got a single "C" typed into the field before the OS caught the request.

My "assuming the best" side thinks like this: oh, it's so they can autocomplete names from my address book in this arbitrary text field... for some reason I can't fathom. I can't think of when I'd want that.

My "assuming the worst" side thinks more like this: autocomplete from the address book is a great cover story for more nefarious things.

I wonder which side is closer to the truth.
